AS: Orange County Rolls Past Vegas for 4th Straight Victory, 9-3
July 25th, 2009
Based on the performance of the Orange County Starz 9 team, the future of lacrosse in the OC is looking brighter and brighter.
OC Starz 9, a squad made up almost entirely of rising sophomores, is on a roll at the Adrenaline Shootout boys high school tournament. On Friday afternoon, Orange County remained unbeaten after posting a decisive 9-3 victory over the Vegas Starz.
Eight different players scored goals for Orange County, led by Santa Margarita Catholic attackman Griffin Foster, who finished with a game-high five points on two goals and three assists. Attackman Sean Cannon and middie Will Daniel also had a goal and an assist.
“We’re just working together and passing it,” Daniel said. “We’ve been together a long time, so we all know how each other plays. It helps us play against bigger people.”
Middies Hunter Kimpler, Matt Duenes, Kent Iizuka, Cameron Stone and Connor Ebner all added a goal for Orange County (4-0).
In defeat, attackman Connor Morgan scored twice and attack-middie Kiernan Eissler had a goal and an assist for Vegas (1-3).
Defensively, goalie Matt Muniz saved 11 shots.
The game was tied, 2-2, after Morgan scored his second with seven minutes to play in the first half, but it was all Orange County from there.
Orange County answered with a seven-goal run, as six different players scored. Duenes kicked it off with an unassisted goal off the ensuing face-off to put Orange County ahead to stay, and Foster made it 9-2 when he scored with six minutes remaining in the game.
