AS: Orange County Lax Club Tops Minnesota in Opener, 7-2

July 16th, 2010

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Middie Joey Kimpler scored a game-high three goals to lead the Orange County Lacrosse Club to a 7-2 victory over the Minnesota Lax Loons in an Adrenaline Shootout Adrenaline Group 2 first-round game Thursday afternoon at Sonoma State University.

Attackman Griffin Foster added a pair of goals to help Orange County (1-0) win its tournament opener. Middies Kyle Spierkel and Chas Harmon each scored once, and attackman Ryan Richards had one assist to round out the offense.

Defensively, goalie Ronnie Pisano saved nine shots, all in the first half.

In defeat, attackmen Sean Hickey and Jack Rice each scored once, and middie Malcolm Quinn and goalie Jack Ramert both finished with one assist for Minnesota (0-1), which dropped its tournament opener.

The game remained scoreless for the opening 18 minutes, thanks in large part to Pisano, who made save after save to negate Minnesota’s early advantage in possession time.

Kimpler finally opened the scoring with seven minutes remaining in the first half, and Foster made it 2-0 just seconds before halftime.

Minnesota pulled within a goal at 2-1 after Hickey scored off a feed from Quinn seven minutes into the second half, but Orange County answered with a five-goal run to take its biggest lead, 7-1. Kimpler scored to start the spurt, and Harmon finished it with two minutes to play in regulation.

“It was a pretty good start, we’ve just got to take care of the ball more,” Kimpler said. “Overall, it was good. We got a win, and it was good stuff. If we play smart lacrosse, we’ve got the talent. We’ve just got to do it every time.”
