KAN BOYS: Olathe Rallies Past Shawnee Mission East, 12-9

April 7th, 2010

Senior attackman Logan Smith scored a game-high six goals to lead Olathe to a come-from-behind, 12-9 victory over Shawnee Mission East in a Lacrosse Association of Kansas game Tuesday afternoon.

Junior middie Joel Wagner added three goals, senior attackman Trevor Ecton and junior middie Max Ash each had a goal and an assist, and junior middie Brett Wilson scored once to help the Hawks (4-2) win their second straight and stay unbeaten against in-state competition.

With the win, Olathe extended its winning streak against Kansas opponents to 16 games.

On Tuesday, Olathe trailed by as many as three goals in the third quarter before it finished the game on a 7-1 run.

“We played real well,” said Olathe assistant coach Cole Dimond, who filled in for head coach Joel Henning on the sideline. “Winning the majority of the face-offs gave us a chance to fight back after we were down."

In defeat, senior attackman Clancy Merrill finished with a team-high five points on four goals and one assist, sophomore attackman Tom Loudon added four points on two goals and two assists and sophomore attackman Droste Milledge had a goal and an assist for Shawnee Mission East, which fell to 2-1.

In a rematch of last year’s state championship game, it was tied, 2-2, at the end of the first quarter, Shawnee Mission East led 6-5 at halftime and the Lancers took their biggest lead at 8-5 after scoring back-to-back goals to start the second half.

But Olathe fought back to tie it, 9-9, by the end of the third quarter, and Ash scored the go-ahead goal to make it 10-9 with 8:02 remaining in regulation. Smith then scored back-to-back goals with 3:25 and 1:46 to play to put the finishing touches on the win.

“I’m really disappointed,” Shawnee Mission East head coach Alex Houlton said. “For some reason, we just ran out of gas, and that allowed them to get back in the game and take the lead.”
