TEX GIRLS: No. 9 St. John's, No. 4 Cy-Fair Win State Semis

Senior attack Lacey Rybarczyk registered a team-high five points on two goals and three assists to lead No. 9 St. John’s to a 9-8 victory over No. 13 Hockaday School in a Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League Division I semifinal Saturday afternoon at the Episcopal School of Dallas.

Junior middie Jessica Carroll and sophomore middie Sarah Udahl each scored three goals to help the Mavericks (18-4) reach the state championship game for the fifth consecutive season.

St. John’s, which will be going for its first state title since 2007, will next face No. 4 Cy-Fair on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., CDT, at Dallas Episcopal. This will be the third meeting of the season between the South District rivals, with Cy-Fair having won the first two, including in the Houston city title game.

“I’m excited to be in it,” St. John’s head coach Angie Kensinger said.

Freshman middie Robby Rybarczyk had a goal to round out the offense for St. John’s, and junior goalie Kelsey Duncombe-Smith saved 13 shots.

Hockaday School, the two-time defending state champion, fell two games short of a three-peat and finished the season 20-2.

St. John’s led 4-3 at halftime and took a 9-6 lead in the second half after Urdahl scored her third with 4:09 to play. Hockaday pulled goals back with 1:17 remaining and with 15 seconds to play, but St. John’s won the final draw and ran out the clock.

Earlier in the day, St. John’s beat Cedar Park, 22-11, in a TGHSLL quarterfinal.

“I was thrilled for the girls,” Kensinger said. “I was really proud we came away with two wins today.”

No. 4 CY-FAIR 18, DALLAS EPISCOPAL 8

Sophomore middie Chesley Hooker registered a game-high eight points on seven goals and one assist to lead the undefeated Iron Maidens to the state championship game.

Sophomore attack Shannon Jamieson added five points on four goals and one assist, junior middie Emily Newstrom had five points on two goals and three assists and junior middie Delaney Fisher scored three goals for Cy-Fair (16-0), which has won 16 straight.

Sophomore attackers Bridget Kimbell and Jamie Ervin each had a goal to round out the offense.

In the cage, sophomore goalie Natalie Weitkanut saved 10 shots.

Cy-Fair led 7-5 at halftime before breaking the game open with 11 goals in the final 25 minutes.

Dallas Episcopal, which beat St. Andrew’s Episcopal 22-15 in a quarterfinal game earlier Saturday, finished the season 17-9.
