MEN: No. 9 Oregon Deals No. 2 Chapman First Loss, 14-11

April 2nd, 2010

Senior attackman Justin Blackmore scored three goals in the fourth quarter to lead No. 9 Oregon to a 14-11 upset victory over No. 2 Chapman in an MCLA Division I game Thursday night in Eugene.

Junior attackman Justin Eckenroad and senior middie Erik Lyneis each scored a co-team-high three goals to help the Ducks (7-2) snap a two-game losing streak and score their biggest win of the season.

Junior middie Kevin Clark added three points on a goal and two assists, sophomore middie Brook Pittenger scored twice and junior attackman Max Schlesinger had a goal and an assist. Sophomore middie Spencer Robertson scored once to round out the Oregon offense.

Defensively, junior goalie Nick Johnston saved 12 shots.

Chapman (9-1) had its 11-game winning streak snapped. The Panthers were officially 9-0 going into the game, but they also had scored two victories over NCAA Division III teams Southern Maine and Ithaca that do not count in the standings.

Although the two schools are separated by many hundred miles, Chapman has numerous Oregon natives on its roster, making this game a virtual civil war. Chapman led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter, Oregon led 8-5 at halftime and the Ducks were up 9-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Oregon led by as many as four in the fourth quarter. Blackmore’s goal with 4:51 remaining in regulation put the Ducks up 13-9.

“It’s a good win,” Oregon head coach Joe Kerwin said. “We knew we were a good team. It’s good to beat a highly-ranked team and clear that hurdle. We feel like we could beat anybody.”
