ORE BOYS: No. 8 Oregon Episcopal Downs No. 14 Lincoln, 9-5
April 23rd, 2009
Senior attackman Sam Baker scored a game-high four goals to lead No. 8 Oregon Episcopal School to a 9-5 victory over No. 14 Lincoln in an Oregon High School Lacrosse Association game between the state’s top two teams.
In a rematch of last year’s state championship game, junior attackman Peter Williams and senior middie Michael Gale each added a pair of goals to help the Aardvarks (9-0) stay unbeaten. Senior attackman Nathan Hayes had a goal and an assist to round out the scoring for OES.
Defensively, senior goalie Andrew Parker saved 10 shots.
In a losing effort, Spencer Director had a team-high two points on a goal and an assist for Lincoln (10-2), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped. Four other players, including senior middie Peter Baum, finished with single goals for the Cardinals.
OES took advantage of the extra possession it had thanks to freshman middie Juergen Kritschgau, who won 10-of-15 face-offs.
The Aardvarks led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, 6-3 at halftime and 8-3 going into the final 12 minutes.
Lincoln scored back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter, and Tony Baum’s goal with 6:12 remaining made it an 8-5 game. But Baker answered by scoring his fourth of the night on a man-up situation with 4:54 to play to seal it.
“It was a great team effort, especially on ground balls,” OES head coach Dennis Sullivan said. “Juergen Kritschgau stepped up, and a lot of seniors did a great job stepping up and leading tonight.”
