COL BOYS: No. 6 Mullen Downs No. 5 Regis Jesuit, 12-10

March 11th, 2010

Junior middie Austin Schacht and senior middie Erik Smith each registered a co-game-high four points to lead No. 6 Mullen to a 12-10 victory over No. 5 Regis Jesuit in a Colorado High School Activities Association game Wednesday.

Schacht scored three goals and added an assist, and Smith finished with two goals, two assists and eight ground balls, as the Mustangs (2-0) won their second straight to start the season.

Senior attackman Tyler Ankarlo scored a pair of goals, senior attackman Brian Kormandy had a goal and an assist and junior middie Nick Ahrens and junior attackman Tyler Standley each scored once to round out the offense for Mullen.

In defeat, Colton Mattei scored a team-high three goals, and Jon Law had three points on a goal and two assists for Regis Jesuit (0-1), which lost its season opener.

Defensively, Virginia-bound junior goalie Rhody Heller saved 11 shots, but the Raiders played the game without their two standout long poles, Tanner Ottenbreit and Tanner Scales.

Regis Jesuit led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, Mullen led 5-4 at halftime, and the Mustangs took control in the third quarter. Mullen reeled off four straight goals to start the second half to take a 9-4 lead going into the final 12 minutes.

Regis Jesuit responded with a six-goal fourth quarter, but the Raiders could never cut the gap closer than two goals.

“There were a lot of mistakes, and I think there were a lot of things we took away from the game that we can improve on,” Mullen head coach Mitch Brin said. “For both teams, it was probably a good learning experience.”
