MINN GIRLS: MSHSL Semis: No. 6 Eden Prairie Routs Woodbury

June 3rd, 2009

Senior attack Caz-Marie Norwich registered a game-high 12 points on seven goals and five assists to lead No. 6 Eden Prairie to a 19-2 victory over Woodbury/Park in a Minnesota State High School League semifinal Tuesday at Hopkins High School.

Freshman attack Christine Easton added four goals to help the top-seeded Eagles (16-1) stay unbeaten against in-state competition and advance to the state championship game for the seventh straight season. Eden Prairie will be going for its fifth state title in the last six years when it faces the winner of Tuesday’s second semifinal between Blake and Centennial.

The Minnesota girls state championship game is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, at 8 p.m., CDT, at Mounds View High School.

“We’re ready, and we’re excited to have the chance to play,” Eden Prairie co-head coach Judy Baxter said. “I think our team is still getting better, so we look forward to a very competitive final.”

On Tuesday, junior middie Makenna Borg added four points on three goals and an assist, senior middie Mikayla Clark and junior attack Blake Kist each had four points on two goals and two assists, and sophomore defender Riley Allen scored once for the Eagles.

In defeat, Sophia Bainbridge and Holly Frankenberg each scored once for fourth-seeded Woodbury/Park (11-7), which will play for third place Thursday against the Blake-Centennial loser.

Tuesday’s game was all Eden Prairie from the start. Borg scored off a feed from Norwich just 26 seconds into the game, and Eden Prairie rolled from there. The Eagles scored the game’s first nine goals and led 13-1 at halftime.

Eden Prairie outshot Woodbury/Park 34-7, had a 17-6 advantage in ground balls and a 16-7 edge in draw controls.

“It was a great day,” Baxter said. “We played very well. We executed, we stuck to our game plan and we came out fast and strong. It was good preparation for the final.”
