COL BOYS: CHSAA Playoffs: Cherry Creek Routs Mullen, 11-1
May 16th, 2010
Senior middie Scott Hewitson and sophomore attackman Kendall Williams each registered a co-game-high three points on two goals and an assist to lead No. 6 Cherry Creek to an 11-1 victory over Mullen in a Colorado High School Activities Association quarterfinal Saturday afternoon at Regis Jesuit.
Junior middie Henry Halle scored two goals to help lead the second-seeded Bruins (15-2) into the state semifinals. Cherry Creek has won five straight.
The Bruins will next face sixth-seeded Kent Denver on Wednesday, May 19, at Englewood High School as part of a state semifinal doubleheader. In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Cherry Creek beat Kent Denver, 7-6, on April 24.
“Obviously, it’s a great match-up,” Cherry Creek head coach Bryan Perry said. “It’s a strong rivalry, and both teams are going to be ready to play, I’m sure.”
On Saturday, senior middie John Neal, senior middie Hogan Dannenberg, junior middie Mac Bolling, sophomore attackman Will Lemon and senior middie Brian Maierhofer all scored once for Cherry Creek. Senior attackman Blake Cassidy had an assist to round out the offense.
Seventh-seeded Mullen finished the season 10-7.
Cherry Creek dominated from the start. The Bruins led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 5-0 at halftime and 8-0 at the end of the third quarter.
“I think, defensively, we put in a heck of an effort,” Perry said. “We did a really nice job containing their offensive threats.”
