COL BOYS: No. 6 Cherry Creek Advances to State Title Game

May 20th, 2010

Junior middie Henri Halle scored a game-high four goals to lead No. 6 Cherry Creek to an 8-5 victory over No. 17 Kent Denver in a Colorado High School Activities Association semifinal Wednesday at Englewood High School.

Senior middie Scott Hewitson added a pair of goals to help the 10-time state champion Bruins (16-2) advance to the title game for the first time since 2006. Second-seeded Cherry Creek will go for its 11th state championship when it faces surprise finalist Regis Jesuit on Saturday, May 22, at 4:30 p.m., MDT, at Invesco Field in Denver.

In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Cherry Creek beat Regis Jesuit, 6-5, on April 27. The Bruins enter the title game on a six-game winning streak, and they have won 12 of their last 13 games.

“They’re a good team, and we certainly have our work cut out for us,” Cherry Creek head coach Bryan Perry said.

On Wednesday, sophomore attackman Will Lemon and sophomore middie Cody Olson each had a goal to round out the offense for Cherry Creek.

In the cage, junior goalie Chris White saved eight shots.

In defeat, sophomore Bailey Tills finished with a team-high three points on two goals and an assist, and sophomore Matt Florence scored twice for sixth-seeded Kent Denver, which finished the season 10-7.

The Sun Devils led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter, but Kent Denver couldn’t put another one in the cage until the fourth quarter. Cherry Creek led 2-1 at halftime and 5-1 at the end of the third quarter.

The Bruins led 7-4 when Halle scored with 1:48 remaining in regulation to give Cherry Creek a four-goal lead.

“We didn’t really execute on all cylinders by any means,” Perry said. “We had a little sand in our gears, but good teams find a way to win when they're not playing their best.”
