NorCAL BOYS: No. 4 SI Prep Tops No. 15 Foothill-Pleasanton

March 13th, 2010

Sophomore attackman J.W. McGovern registered a co-game-high six points on a goal and five assists to lead No. 4 St. Ignatius Prep to a 13-8 victory over No. 15 Foothill-Pleasanton in a California Interscholastic Federation game Friday afternoon.

Senior middie Rob Emery scored a game-high five goals, and junior middie Johno Gibbons added a pair to help the Wildcats (1-0) win their season opener.

Junior attackman Jack Bodine, senior middie Nick Alimam, sophomore middie Will McKee, sophomore attackman Peter Doyle and freshman middie Matt Emery all added goals to round out the offense for St. Ignatius Prep.

In defeat, junior attackman Gabe Garcia posted a team-high six points on three goals and three assists for Foothill (3-1), which had its season-opening, three-game winning streak snapped.

Senior attackman Scott Wheaton added a pair of goals, and senior attackman Broc Schall, freshman attackman Jerome Rigor and junior middie Colin Kacinski all scored once for the Falcons.

St. Ignatius Prep overcame challenging weather conditions to take an early lead and gradually pull away. Much of the game was played in a torrential downpour and high winds, but that didn’t stop the Wildcats from going ahead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 8-5 at halftime.

The rain subsided into a light drizzle by the end of the third quarter, as St. Ignatius Prep scored three straight to start the second half and push ahead, 11-5. The Wildcats were never seriously threatened in the fourth quarter.

With the victory, St. Ignatius Prep has extended its winning streak that dates back to last season to 17 games. The Wildcats have won 48 straight games against Northern California competition.

St. Ignatius Prep’s last loss against a team from either the Central Coast Section or North Coast Section came on April 4, 2006, when the Wildcats fell 12-8 to Danville Monte Vista.

And it was cold too ;)

WSL - You forgot to mention (besides rain and wind) that it was cold as heck ;)

CORRECTION

An earlier version of the story said Jack Bodine had 1G, 5A when it was actually J.W. McGovern. WSL regrets the error.
