TEX GIRLS: No. 4 Cy-Fair Wins South District Championship

May 3rd, 2010

Junior middie Emily Newstrom registered a team-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead No. 4 Cy-Fair to a 13-7 victory over No. 5 St. John’s in the Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League South District Division I championship game Sunday afternoon.

Junior middie Delaney Fisher added three goals to help the Iron Maidens (15-0) win their 15th straight and dethrone St. John’s in the Houston city title game. Cy-Fair now enters the state tournament with two wins over the arch-rival Mavericks this season.

“We’ve had a lot thrown at us this year, but we’re such a strongly bonded group,” Cy-Fair assistant coach Jen Aneedilich said. “We’ve all got each other’s backs, and we know what we need to do and how to get it done.”

Sophomore middie Chesley Hooker and sophomore attack Bridget Kimbell each scored twice, and senior middie Kat Loos and sophomore attack Shannon Jamieson both had a goal to round out the offense for Cy-Fair.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Natalie Weitkunat saved 12 shots.

St. John’s (16-4) has now lost two straight championship games this week. On Friday, the Mavericks went down to No. 16 Houston Episcopal in the Southwest Preparatory Conference title game.

Cy-Fair led 4-3 at halftime and then exploded for nine second-half goals to take control.

“The second half, we came out really strong,” Aneedilich said. “We were sucking up all the ground balls, our defense was really strong, we were communicating really well and our offensive effort was really good.”
