May 23rd, 2010
Junior middie Maxwell Blair registered a game-high six points on three goals and three assists to lead No. 3 Denver East to a 17-13 victory over No. 25 Kent Denver in a Colorado High School Activities Association semifinal Saturday afternoon at the University of Denver.
Senior middie Kelley McCarroll-Gilbert added five points on three goals and two assists to help the second-seeded Angels (16-1) advance to the state championship game. Denver East will next face No. 1 Cherry Creek on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., MDT, at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, the Bruins dealt Denver East its only loss of the season, 14-10, on May 4.
“We’ve just got to control the ball more against Creek and control the tempo,” Denver East head coach Bobby Romero said. “We’ll start looking at the tapes of Creek right away.”
On Saturday, sophomore Mary Prevedel added four points on three goals and an assist, senior Tori Larson had four points on two goals and two assists and junior Tierra Romero scored three goals for Denver East.
In defeat, sophomore middie Lucy Mower finished with a team-high five points on three goals and two assists, and sophomore middie Lucy Dikeou had four points on three goals and one assist for sixth-seeded Kent Denver, which finished the season 12-6.
Denver East led 8-6 at halftime and outscored the Sun Devils, 9-7, over the final 25 minutes.
“We just had to slow the ball down as much as we could,” Bobby Romero said. “The key was putting in whoever had fresh legs.”
