AZ BOYS: No. 24 Brophy Prep Wins 3rd State Title in 4 Years

May 15th, 2010

Sophomore middie Brock Ghelfi and senior attackman Adam Fishman each registered a co-game-high five points to lead No. 24 Brophy Prep to a 10-8 victory over Chandler in the Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I championship game Friday night at Chaparral High School.

Ghelfi scored four goals and added an assist, and Fishman finished with two goals and three assists, as the Broncos (18-2) won their third state championship in the last four years before a record crowd of nearly 2,000.

Brophy Prep also won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2007.

Senior attackman Kevin Murney scored twice, and junior attackman Andrew Fennessy and senior long-stick middie Andrew Lundahl each had a goal to round out the offense for the Broncos.

In defeat, senior middie Andrew Muscara had five points on two goals and three assists, sophomore attackman Sean LaFlam scored three goals and sophomore attackman Jonah Woessner finished with a goal and an assist for Chandler, which finished the season 13-4.

Senior middie Michael Giffen and junior middie Brandon Moranz each scored once for the Wolves.

In the cage, senior goalie Brian LaFlam saved nine shots.

Chandler led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter before Brophy Prep turned it around in the second to take a 6-4 halftime lead. The Broncos led 9-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Fennessy scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter to put the Broncos ahead, 10-6, with 7:39 remaining. Muscara scored with 2:14 to play, and Sean LaFlam made it a two-goal game with 14 seconds left, but it was too little, too late for Chandler.

“We played hard, and we played pretty well,” Chandler head coach Dave Henning said. “We just had about a six-minute stretch in the second quarter when we lost our game plan and lost our composure. I think, physically, we fought them pretty well. We gave up too much transition with offensive miscues.”
