AZ BOYS: No. 24 Brophy Prep Advances to State-Title Game
May 9th, 2010
For the first time in nearly a decade, the Chaparral boys lacrosse team will not play in the state championship game.
Senior attackman Adam Fishman registered a game-high four points on a goal and three assists to lead No. 24 Brophy Prep to a 9-4 victory over the Firebirds in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I semifinal Saturday night.
Sophomore middie Brock Ghelfi scored three goals, and five others scored once, as the Broncos (17-2) advanced to the state championship game for the fifth straight season. Brophy Prep, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, will be going for its third title in the last four years when it faces third-seeded Chandler on Friday night.
In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Brophy Prep beat Chandler, 10-6, in its season opener on March 9.
On Saturday, Wyatt Rodgers, Joe Overall, Colin Churchill, Nick Latham and Dan Bohnert all added single goals for the Broncos, who enter the title game on a four-game winning streak.
In defeat, sophomore attackman Ryan Erickson and senior attackman Jeff Petznick each scored twice for fourth-seeded Chaparral, which finished the season 12-4.
The Firebirds, the only team in Arizona to beat Brophy this season, fell short in its bid for an unprecedented ninth straight state championship game appearance.
Brophy Prep used a quick start to take control and scored all the goals it would need in the opening 12 minutes. The Broncos led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, 6-2 at halftime and 7-4 at the end of the third quarter before tacking on two more in the fourth to win going away.
