MEN: No. 23 Texas State Upsets No. 13 California in OT, 14-13

March 8th, 2010

Senior attackman Robert Jones scored the game-winning goal on the opening possession of sudden-death overtime to give No. 23 Texas State a thrilling, 14-13 upset victory over No. 13 California in an MCLA Division I game Sunday afternoon.

Jones took possession coming out of a timeout, face-dodged his defender and fired a jump-shot into the cage from about 10 yards to give the Bobcats (7-0) their seventh straight win to start the season.

Senior attackman Matt Malcolm finished with a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists, Jones added six points on three goals and three assists and junior middie Chad Hennig had three points on two goals and one assist for Texas State.

Senior middie Mike Zdonczik doled out three assists, and sophomore middie Harrison Parr added a goal and an assist.

California (4-2) had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Texas State led 9-5 at halftime and 12-7 at the end of the third quarter before the Golden Bears rallied to force overtime.

However, in the extra session, Texas State won the opening face-off and immediately called timeout. Jones grabbed the ball after the break, and finished the game himself.

“This is probably the biggest win in program history,” Texas State head coach Chris Park said. “A lot of people probably don’t know who Texas State is, but this is tremendous. It helps Texas State make a name for itself.”
