ORE BOYS: OHSLA Playoffs: No. 21 Lincoln Escapes Southridge

May 26th, 2010

Senior middie Henry Schoonmaker registered a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists to lead No. 21 Lincoln to a 15-10 victory over Southridge in an Oregon High School Lacrosse Association second-round playoff game Tuesday night.

Schoonmaker did it all Tuesday. He also won 23-of-27 face-offs, and he picked up 15 ground balls, as the Cardinals (18-3) won their 14th straight game to advance to the state quarterfinals.

Lincoln will next face West Linn on Friday night at 8 p.m., PDT, in the state’s marquee quarterfinal match-up.

“They’re a very good team,” Lincoln head coach Will Harris said. “I think this Southridge game prepared us well for it. I expect a very close game.”

On Tuesday, sophomore attackman Grant Clifford scored four goals, and sophomore attackman Michael Marcott dished four assists for a Lincoln team that didn’t put Southridge away until the late stages of the fourth quarter.

Junior middie Tony Baum and senior middie Zane Koeller each scored twice, and senior middie Aaron Barg and senior attackman Matt Fettig both had a goal to round out the scoring.

In the cage, junior goalie Max Dickenson made 15 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter.

Southridge finished the season 12-8.

The game was tied, 4-4, at the end of the first quarter, Lincoln led 9-5 at halftime and the Cardinals were ahead, 12-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Southridge wouldn’t go down without a fight in the fourth, however. The Skyhawks got as close as 13-10 in the fourth before Schoonmaker and Baum scored with 3:45 and 3:17 remaining respectively to finally put it away.

“My team played with a lot of heart and had some great individual efforts,” Harris said. “We’re just very much focused on playing West Linn on Friday. That has a semifinal character to it.”
