ORE BOYS: Lincoln Advances to 3rd Straight State Title Game

June 3rd, 2010

Senior middie Henry Schoonmaker scored a game-high five goals to lead No. 21 Lincoln to a 10-8 victory over Lakerige in an Oregon High School Lacrosse Association semifinal Wednesday night in the second game of a doubleheader at Tualatin High School.

Sophomore attackman Grant Clifford added a pair of goals, junior middie Tony Baum had a goal and an assist and sophomore attackman Michael Marcott dished two assists to help the Cardinals (20-3) win their 16th straight and advance to the Oregon state championship game for the third consecutive season.

Lincoln, which will be going for its second state title in the last three years, will next face Sunset at 7:30 p.m., PDT, at Tualatin High School on Saturday night. Both teams are unbeaten against in-state competition this season.

“We’ll be playing against one of the best goalies in the state,” Lincoln head coach Will Harris said. “We’re going to have to play a little bit better offensively. We can’t take the goalie out of the game, so it’s something we’re going to have to deal with. It’s going to be a very good game.”

On Wednesday, senior attackman Matt Fettig and senior middie Zane Koeller each scored once to round out the offense for Lincoln, which overcame a second-half deficit for the second straight game.

In the cage, junior goalie Max Dickenson saved seven shots.

In defeat, senior middie Drew Brooker had a team-high three points on a goal and two assists, junior middies David Swanson and Michael Hoch each scored twice, and senior attackman Brandon Blackmore had a goal and an assist for Lakeridge, which finished the season, 17-6.

Defensively, senior goalie Warren Nielsen saved 15 shots.

Lakeridge led 4-2 early in the third quarter when Lincoln used a seven-goal run to turn it around. By the time Clifford scored with nine minutes left in regulation to cap it, the Cardinals led, 9-4.

The Pacers never came closer than two goals the rest of the way.

“I’m very happy with the way we played in the second half,” Harris said.

Said Lakeridge head coach Curt Sheinin: “In the second half, they got on a run, and our guys wouldn’t quit. We just ran out of time.”
