May 13th, 2010

Junior middie Brandon Wall registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist to lead No. 20 Brighton to a 13-5 victory over Waterford in a Utah High School Lacrosse League Division I semifinal Wednesday afternoon at Park City High School.

Junior attackman Kurt Pascoe added five points on four goals and one assist, junior middie Dillon Tran scored three goals and sophomore middie Chase Paulson finished with two points on a goal and an assist to help the undefeated Bengals (13-0) win their 13th straight and advance to the state championship game for the first time in program history.

Brighton, which was playing in the state semifinals for the first time in school history Wednesday, will next face the winner of the Park City-Jordan semifinal. The Utah High School Lacrosse League Division I state championship game will be played Saturday night, May 15, at 7 p.m., MDT, at Viewmont High School.

“Regardless of who we play, we’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game,” Brighton head coach Steve Gray said. “I have a lot of confidence in our boys. If we play to our potential, we’ll have a favorable outcome.”

On Wednesday, junior goalie Nate Wilkinson faced just 11 shots on cage. He saved six shots.

In defeat, senior middie Alek Mika scored three goals for Waterford, which finished the season 11-7.

Brighton led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 6-4 at halftime before putting it away with a five-goal run to start the second half.

The Bengals scored two of those goals in the third quarter to take an 8-4 lead going into the final 12 minutes, and Pascoe capped the run with 4:48 to play in regulation to give Brighton an insurmountable, 11-4 lead.

“Our team played with a lot of maturity and discipline,” Gray said. “We were able to identify the key match-ups, and our boys executed our game plan well.”
