SoCAL GIRLS: No. 19 Los Alamitos Wins 1st Orange County Title
The third time was the charm for the Los Alamitos girls lacrosse team.
Senior attack Francie Crowell finished with a team-high 10 points on five goals and five assists to lead the top-seeded Griffins to a 15-10 victory over third-seeded Foothill-Orange County in the Orange County girls championship game Tuesday.
With the victory, No. 19 Los Alamitos advanced to the CIF-Southern Section championship game, which will be played Friday afternoon at 5 p.m., PDT, at Mira Costa High School. The Griffins will next face the Cate School, the Los Angeles Area girls champion.
In the teams’ only meeting this season, Los Alamitos beat the Rams, 13-10, on April 10.
“We’re excited to play Cate again,” Los Alamitos head coach Meredith Adamicki said. “We know it is going to be another battle, so we’re going to come out fired up and ready to play.”
The Griffins had lost in the Orange County championship game to Foothill-OC in 2007 and to St. Margaret’s Episcopal last year.
“Foothill is a great team, but we lost in the Orange County final the last two years so the girls were ready this time around,” Adamicki said.
On Tuesday, junior middie Shaina Denny scored five goals and junior middie Ashley Actkinson added three points on one goal and two assists to help Los Alamitos (18-0) remain unbeaten.
Senior attack Megan Baikie and junior attack Melanie Martinez both scored twice to round out the scoring for the Griffins.
Foothill finished its season 14-5.
Los Alamitos led 10-6 at halftime before extending that lead in the second half.
"We are really happy about the win,” Adamicki added. “But we are going to continue to take it one game at a time.”
