NorCAL BOYS: No. 18 San Ramon Valley Tops S.F. University

March 10th, 2010

Junior attackman Chase Miller and sophomore attackman Zach Kline each registered a co-game-high three points to lead No. 18 San Ramon Valley to a 7-3 victory over San Francisco University in a CIF-North Coast Section game Tuesday night.

Miller scored two goals and added an assist, and Kline finished with a goal and two assists, as the unbeaten Wolves handed the Red Devils their first loss of the season.

Sophomore middie Michael Tagliaferri scored a pair of goals, and Cornell-bound senior middie Ross Rudow and sophomore middie Jordan Weiss each had a goal and an assist for San Ramon Valley (3-0), which won its third straight to start the season. Sophomore middie Patrick Worstell dished an assist to round out the offense.

In defeat, Henry Steyer finished with a team-high two points on a goal and an assist for San Francisco University (3-1), which had its season-opening, three-game winning streak snapped.

San Francisco University may have entered the game as the heavy underdog, but the Red Devils did not go down easily. They led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter before San Ramon Valley bounced back in the second quarter to take a 4-2 halftime lead.

The Wolves led 5-2 at the end of the third quarter before closing it out in the final 12 minutes.

“It was a well-fought battle,” San Ramon Valley head coach Peter Worstell said. “I give a lot of credit to Unviersity for coming over and playing a real tough and very disciplined game. It was tight all the way. I never felt comfortable, but I’ll take the ‘W’ and keep moving.”
