WASH GIRLS: No. 18 Lakeside Routs No. 9 Bainbridge Island
March 17th, 2010
Two months before the season began, the Lakeside girls lacrosse coaching staff insisted Bainbridge Island was the team to beat this season and they didn’t know how the Lions would be able to stack up against the Spartans.
Apparently, head coach Jamie Asaka and assistant coach Marc Binder didn’t realize what they had under their direction.
On Tuesday, senior middies Sylvia Warren and Sarah Pollnow each registered a co-game-high six points to lead No. 18 Lakeside to a dominating, 20-10 victory over No. 9 Bainbridge Island in a Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association Division I game.
Warren and Pollnow each finished with five goals and one assist, and junior middie Emma Dorland also scored five goals, as the Lions (1-0) rolled to a decisive season-opening victory.
“I’m surprised,” Binder said. “Normally, Bainbridge is way ahead of us at the beginning of the season. Our girls played with poise and patience, and they had good shot selection.”
Senior attack Emmy Armintrout added three points on a goal and two assists, and senior middie Kyra Ray had a goal to round out the offense for Lakeside, which has beaten Bainbridge Island in the last four state championship games.
Usually, the Lakeside-Bainbridge Island game is tooth-and-nail right down to the bitter end. But that wasn’t how it went Tuesday.
Lakeside rolled to a 10-4 halftime lead and then played just as well in the second half.
“Honestly, I think we played as well as we could play today,” Bainbridge Island head coach Tami Tommila said. “We’re just finding our identity. It’s going to be a process.”
