TEX GIRLS: No. 18 Cy-Fair Upsets No. 3 St. John's, 15-11

April 2nd, 2010

Junior middie Emily Newstrom registered a game-high eight points on seven goals and one assist to lead No. 18 Cy-Fair to a 15-11 upset victory over No. 3 St. John’s in a Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League South District Division I game Thursday night.

Sophomore attack Shannon Jamieson added five points on four goals and one assist, and sophomore attack Chesley Hooker scored twice to help the unbeaten Iron Maidens (11-0) win their 11th straight game and pull off their second upset of the week. On Tuesday, Cy-Fair knocked off No. 12 Houston Episcopal, 8-6.

Senior middie Kat Loos and junior middie Delaney Fisher each scored once to round out the offense for Cy-Fair, which has shown this week that it is for real.

Defensively, goalie Natalie Weitkunat saved 14 shots.

In defeat, four players scored twice for St. John’s (9-2), which suffered its first loss in eight games against Texas competition.

This was expected to be a bit of a down year for Cy-Fair, which has a young team and lost its top scorer, Casey McCarthy, to a torn ACL before the season. But it hasn’t turned out that way. Cy-Fair has steamrolled through the competition and continues to overcome adversity.

It even beat Houston Episcopal earlier in the week without head coach Chris Haefele, who was suspended after being ejected in the Iron Maidens' previous game.

On Thursday, Cy-Fair led 8-6 at halftime. After St. John’s scored the first goal of the second half to pull within one, the Iron Maidens used a three-goal run to push ahead 11-7 and take control.

“They believe in each other right now,” Haefele said. “They’ve had to overcome a lot of adversity this season. They’ve fought back through it, and their effort has been remarkable. We’ve got a long way to go, though.”
