MEN: EPIC! No. 17 California Tops Sonoma State in 6OT, 11-10
March 15th, 2010
No. 17 California and Sonoma State played a game for the ages Sunday afternoon.
Freshman middie Jon Chee scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining in sextuple-overtime to give No. 17 California an epic, 11-10 victory over Sonoma State in an MCLA Division I game.
Chee ended 23:49 of scoreless extra-time play when he weaved through several defenders and scored form about seven yards with a low shot to give the Golden Bears (5-2) what will likely go down as the most memorable win in program history. It was Chee’s only goal of the game, and it gave California its fourth victory in its last five games.
“It was as strong a mental effort as I’ve seen from any team that I’ve ever been associated with,” California head coach Dan Nourse said.
Freshman attackman Dan Cohen scored a team-high four goals, senior middie Luke Langon and sophomore attackman John Hofinga each added a pair, and sophomore attackman Connor Thomas had a goal and an assist for California. Chee and junior defenseman Sam Tobis had single goals to round out the offense.
Defensively, junior goalie Forrest Cheney saved 21 shots.
In defeat, junior middie Max Larkin finished with a game-high five points on four goals and one assist, and senior middie Mike Sylvester added four points on three goals and one assist for Sonoma State, which fell to 0-5. Sonoma State has lost three one-goal games and one two-game game this season.
In the cage, junior Michael Clothier was sensational in a losing effort. He saved 24 shots.
Sonoma State led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, the game was tied, 7-7 at halftime and California led 10-7 at the end of the third quarter.
Sonoma State came back with three straight goals to end regulation, and the Seawolves forced overtime when Larkin scored the game-tying goal with 21 seconds remaining.
The teams then played one overtime after another without a goal until Chee finally ended it.
“I’ve never been associated with a six-overtime game,” Nourse said. “I was extremely proud of the team, especially the defense and Forrest, for holding them scoreless for that length of overtime.”
