MINN BOYS: MSHSL Semis: Minnetonka Tops Centennial, 20-13
Senior attackman Pete Carbonneau registered a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists to lead No. 15 Minnetonka to a 20-13 victory over Centennial in a Minnesota State High School League semifinal Wednesday at Hopkins High School.
Senior attackman Sean Folley added six points on four goals and two assists to help the Skippers (17-0) win their 17th straight and advance to the state championship game for the first time in school history.
Minnetonka will next face the winner of Wednesday’s second semifinal, between Eastview and Blake, on Friday, June 5, at 8 p.m., CDT, at Mounds View High School.
“It’s going to be intense,” Minnetonka head coach Aaron Olivier said. “We’ve played both Eastview and Blake. Whoever we play, that team is going to be different than the first time we played them, and we have to be ready for a battle.”
On Wednesday, senior middie Charles Earl Hanson added four points on three goals and one assist, senior attackman Matt Wyer had three goals, junior middie Jake Rossman finished with a goal and two assists and senior middie Jay Morgan added a goal and an assist for the Skippers.
In defeat, senior middie Josh Osen finished with a team-high six points on five goals and one assist for Centennial (15-1), which had its 15-game winning streak snapped.
Minnetonka led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, 10-7 at halftime and 14-9 going into the fourth quarter.
“It’s the first time we’ve hit 20 goals all season, and we picked a great time to do it,” Olivier said. “Our defense gave them too much, and we have some things to tighten up inside if we’re going to win the state championship. But, overall, I’m really happy, and our players are really happy to try to win the first state championship for Minnetonka.”
