ORE-WASH BOYS: No. 14 Lincoln Drops No. 20 Bainbridge, 16-9

May 10th, 2009

Sensational senior middie Peter Baum has left a trail of destruction through the Evergreen State.

On Saturday, Baum registered a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists to lead No. 14 Lincoln to a decisive, 16-9 victory over No. 20 Bainbridge Island in the Cardinals’ second game of the weekend in the Seattle metro area.

Baum, who scored seven goals in a losing effort Friday night against No. 11 Mercer Island, finished the weekend with 13 goals in two games against two of Washington’s top three teams.

Baum had some help Saturday, as junior attackman Matthew Fettig added six points on five goals and one assist, senior middie Spencer Director dished three assists and freshmen attackmen Grant Clifford and Michael Marcott each finished with a pair of goals.

Junior middie Henry Schoonmaker also had a multiple-point effort, finishing with a goal and an assist.

“We had a great trip to Washington,” Lincoln head coach Will Harris said. “We played extraordinarily well and played two very good teams. These are the two best games we’ve played all season, and it puts us in a good position to close out the regular season heading into playoffs.”

Bainbridge Island fell to 12-3.

Lincoln led 8-6 at halftime before it broke the game open with a four-goal run in the third quarter to take a 12-6 lead going into the final 12 minutes. Bainbridge Island never threatened again.

“We played a lot better middie defense in the third quarter,” Harris said. “We kept track of their guys a little better.”

Only BI is a real "team"

I've seen all three teams play, and we've played two of them.  The only one that impressed me as a team was Bainbridge, who beat us at the beginning of the season and also soundly beat Oregon's #3 team down here during the tournament.  Lincoln was an easy target without Landon Carr; we beat them 10-5.  We didn't play Mercer but they recruit internationally and I doubt they would be in the top 5 in their own state without the Shields brothers. The other "team" that impressed us was Issaquah.  Great shooters, dynamic offense, fun to watch.

Now that's funny!

(Only BI is a real "team")!?

You call the "Sam & Kevin show" a team effort? You must not know a lot about lacrosse. MI's defense kept them to 3 points combined, and the rest of their "team" didn't/couldn't do anything.

By the way, MI has been in the top 3 in state for the past 10 years.

Okay, Issaquah is a real team also :)

Kevin Nguyen isn't even the #2 scorer on Bainbridge, it's a guy named Jordan Wagner.  Let's look at some other statistics that illustrate teams vs individuals:

# of players in top 25 for Points

5 - Issaquah
4 - Northshore
3 - Bainbridge
2 - Skyline, Curtis, Bellevue, Vashon, Seattle Prep, Mercer (both 'exchange students')

# of players in top 25 for Ground Balls

6 - Curtis
4 - Bainbridge, Skyline
2 - Bellevue, Seattle Prep, Mercer, Issaquah

My point is, Mercer is a great team. So is Lincoln.  But take away their #1 players and you've got a different 'team' altogether.

Individuals

Individuals don't make a team. Mercer's depth is what makes them a great team. Take the # 1 player out of any team and this would affect their performance, this doesn't just apply to Mercer and Lincoln.

Defense.

Playing as a "team" is not unique to offense. Haven't you ever heard the expression "Defense wins championships"?

So if you really want to talk about who plays best as a team, what about the fact that MI's "team defense" held Issy's "team offense" to 1 goal in three quarters (2nd-4th), and 4 goals overall. That's pretty good "team play" considering Issy has 5 players in the top 25 for points.

Issaquah has a very well balanced offense, but MI has the strongest defense in the state, hands down. It will make a really good championship game if they both get that far.

Mercer Island Game

i feel lincoln should have won the mercer island game, the refs really stole it away from them with baums  post shot that went out of bounds and some how the ref gave it to mercer that really just showed how badly the washington refs wanted Mercer the washington team to win..

Oh please!

Don't be bitter just because you lost. Both teams had equal penalty time, so you can't blame it on the refs, and the MI player was closer to the ball when it went out of bounds. What about the bogus call on MI's face-off guy for a hold when the Lincoln player was lying on top of him? That one went your way.

Besides, MI was up by 4 with four minutes left and then they got lazy. It was clearly MI's game!

Who had how many minutes in

Who had how many minutes in the box doesn't matter, penalties are part of the game.  Both teams played exceptionally well and there were questionable calls against both teams.  I'm sure the refs were well meaning, just in a little over their heads.

Regarding Mercer being up by 4 with 4 minutes to go, thats only a matter of timing.  Lincoln was up by three after only a few minutes of the game.  When who was up and by how much isn't important.  Point could be made that when Lincoln was up by three they relaxed.  Not saying they did, but it makes about as much sense as your statement that Mercer relaxed when they had a four point lead. And if they did, what does it say about their team?

What I saw was two of the top 3 or 4 teams in the Northwest (Mercer, Lincoln, OES and Issy) battle it out until the end.  The game and was eventially decided by a matter of inches, as it should have been, and both teams deserve adulations.

haha

haha you know whats funny is the game was taped. There where 3 lincoln players on the sideline it was real clear that it should have been lincoln ball, i never said i wanted lincoln to win just saying after that pipe shot it should of definatly been lincoln ball with 1:45 left.

Poser.

If you really did watch tape (which I doubt) you would see that MI's attackman, on their offensive half of the field, was closest to the ball when it when out of bounds.

Why don't you rewind a little further and look at where the refs gave the ball to Lincoln after they tackled MI's face-off middie. Penalty's were even, you're a sore loser.

Loved playing at Bainbridge

The ferry ride over was great, and they were wonderful hosts - we even got free burgers from the bar-b-q!

Mercer gave us a better game and we should have won. I noticed Bainbridge took out their starting defense in the second half and was wondering why. Anyone know?

 Hey, Mercer Island played a

Hey, Mercer Island played a good game, so did Lincoln. Some great individual efforts. Great game to be a part of, definitely showed that OR and WA are very equal, especially with Lincoln stomping BI the next day, and having beaten Issaquah earlier in the season. That call was close and tough for a ref to make, I hold no grudges. Mercer were great hosts as well. Definitely some statements made in that game.
