NEV BOYS: No. 13 Palo Verde Escapes Henderson Again
May 1st, 2010
Junior middie Jordan Grant, senior attackman Mike Quinn and senior attackman Andrew Turner all registered a co-team-high five points to lead No. 13 Palo Verde to a come-from-behind, 18-15 victory over Henderson in a Southern Nevada Lacrosse Association Division I game Friday night.
Grant had four goals and one assist, Quinn finished with two goals and three assists and Turner had a goal and four assists, as Palo Verde (16-1) overcame a two-goal, fourth-quarter deficit. It was the second time this season that the Panthers had to come from behind in the second half to beat Henderson.
Junior attackman Jimmy Bivans, senior middie James White and senior middie Malik Matthews all scored three goals, and senior middie Corey Medovich added a pair to round out the offense for Palo Verde.
In defeat, junior middie Jet Harding scored a game-high six goals for Henderson, which fell to 8-2. Both of Henderson’s losses have come against Palo Verde.
There hasn’t been much defense when these two teams get together. In two games this season, Palo Verde and Henderson have combined to score 58 goals.
On Friday, Henderson led 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, Palo Verde led 10-8 at halftime and the Cougars regained the lead, 15-13, at the end of the third quarter.
But Palo Verde answered in the fourth, reeling off five straight down the stretch. Bivans scored the go-ahead goal off a feed from Quinn with 3:58 remaining to put the Panthers ahead, 16-15. Grant then scored back-to-back goals with 3:19 to play and with five seconds left to give Palo Verde its final margin of victory.
“Henderson’s a young, talented bunch, and they come to play,” Palo Verde head coach Gary Campo said. “They don’t quit, and they had our backs against the wall again.
“I’m proud of our effort to come back again, but we’ve got to play better defense if we’re going to win this thing.”
