May 27th, 2010

Senior attackman Brett Mennella registered a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists to lead No. 13 Bellevue to a 13-3 victory over Bainbridge Island in a Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association Division I semifinal Wednesday night.

Senior attackman Ryan Deal added five points on four goals and one assist to help lead the Wolverines to their first state championship game appearance in 18 years. Bellevue last played for a state title in 1992, head coach John Baumann said.

Bellevue will next face No. 3 Mercer Island on Saturday night, May 29, at 7:30 p.m., PDT, at Memorial Stadium in Seattle. In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, the Islanders edges the Wolverines, 7-5, on May 14.

“I think we have great momentum,” Baumann said. “We’re very excited to be there and have a chance to win a state championship. I’m happy for everyone in the program, but we’re not done.”

On Wednesday, senior middie Thomas Zervas had a goal and two assists, senior middie Cole Nordstrom dished three assists and senior middie Eric Omri scored twice for Bellevue (19-3). Sophomore attackman Blake Samuel and junior attackman Thomas Spangler each had a goal to round out the offense.

Bainbridge Island finished the season 13-9.

Bellevue led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 5-0 at halftime and 12-2 at the end of the third quarter.

“We played our best ball of the season tonight,” Baumann said. “We prepared for the last two weeks to play our best ball at the end, and it seems to be working.”
