NEV BOYS: No. 10 Palo Verde Edges Centennial, Loses Star
May 8th, 2010
No. 10 Palo Verde rallied in the fourth quarter to avenge its only loss Friday night, but the Panthers likely lost their future NCAA Division I standout for the season with a potentially devastating knee injury.
Junior attackman Jimmy Bivans registered a team-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead Palo Verde to a 12-11 victory over Centennial in a Southern Nevada Lacrosse Association Division I game in which the Panthers used a late three-goal run in the fourth quarter to overturn a deficit.
But Vermont-bound senior Mike Quinn went down in the second quarter, and Palo Verde head coach Gary Campo said the initial prognosis is not promising.
“Early indications are it’s bad,” Campo said.
Despite losing Quinn, Palo Verde managed to come out ahead after letting a three-goal lead slip away when the Panthers star player went down.
“After Mike went down, everyone was concerned about him,” Campo said. “It affected us. But we realized we had to overcome adversity, and we did. I’ve got to give credit to my guys. Everyone gets up for Palo Verde, and we overcame adversity. I love these kids.”
Junior middie Jordan Grant added three points on two goals and one assist, senior attackman Andrew Turner had three assists and senior middies James White and Corey Medovich each scored twice to help the Panthers (18-1) win their fifth straight.
Three others scored once to round out the offense for Palo Verde.
In defeat, sophomore attackman Blake Krowicki had a game-high six points on three goals and three assists, junior attackman Cody Milligan scored four goals and junior middie Harrison Krueger finished with a goal and two assists for the Bulldogs (10-4).
Junior middie Joey Mecham added a goal and an assist, and senior middie Brandon Krowicki and eighth-grade middie Justin Anderson each scored once.
In the cage, sophomore goalie Mitch Dunbar saved 11 shots.
Palo Verde led 6-3 at the end of the first quarter and 8-5 in the second when Quinn’s injury occurred. Afterward, Centennial scored four unanswered goals to finish the first half and take a 9-8 lead.
The game was tied, 9-9, at the end of the third quarter, and Centennial led 10-9 in the fourth when Palo Verde went on its decisive run. Bivans scored the equalizer with 4:49 remaining, Grant gave Palo Verde the lead with 3:13 to play and White put the Panthers up 12-10 with 2:49 left.
Centennial pulled within a goal with 29 seconds remaining, but Palo Verde won the ensuing face-off and ran out the clock, Campo said.
“It was a good game,” Centennial head coach Tank Thomas said. “I thought we played well. If we fix the little mistakes, it will be an interesting playoffs. I’m proud of the guys. They played well.”
