MEN: No. 10 Cal Poly Tops No. 16 UC Santa Barbara, 13-10

February 14th, 2010

Sophomore middie Scott Heberer registered a co-game-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead No. 10 Cal Poly to a 13-10 victory over No. 16 UC Santa Barbara in an MCLA Division I game Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara.

Junior middie Matt Rudow added three goals, senior attackman Colin Mason dished three assists and sophomore attackman Matt Graupmann and senior attackman Andrew Haviland each scored twice to help the Mustangs (2-0) win their second straight.

Sophomore attackman Brett Vergara had two assists, and senior middie Ryan Alletag, senior middie Brett Sack, sophomore middie Peter Chang and freshman middie Tim Albo all had a goal to round out the scoring for Cal Poly.

In defeat, junior middie Nate Wellin finished with four points on two goals and two assists for the Gauchos, who fell to 1-2.

Cal Poly led 9-5 late in the third quarter, but UC Santa Barbara took advantage of a three-minute, non-releasable, unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to get back into the game. The Gauchos scored four goals on the ensuing man-up opportunity to tie it, 9-9, in the fourth quarter.

After the teams traded goals, Sack put Cal Poly ahead to stay when he scored with 6:07 remaining in regulation. Chang put Cal Poly up 12-10 with 4:12 to play, and Haviland added insurance when he scored with 3:53 remaining.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Cal Poly head coach Marc Lea said. “We thought we were pulling away in the third quarter, and things went south there for a while. But we battled back, and I was proud of the team for staying together after they tied it and pulling out the victory.”
