TEX BOYS: No. 10 Austin Tops Westwood in 2OT Thriller, 12-11

March 26th, 2010

Senior attackman Max Roach scored the game-winning goal 29 seconds into double-overtime to give No. 10 Austin a thrilling, 12-11 victory over Westwood in a Texas High School Lacrosse League Central District Division I game Thursday night.

Roach scored his fifth of the night from just off the crease after taking a feed from junior attackman Billy Bedellion. Roach’s goal set off a wild celebration, as Austin (6-2) won its fourth straight and beat Westwood in overtime for the fourth straight season.

Bedellion registered a game-high six points on a goal and five assists, junior middie Will Schuhmacher scored three goals and junior middie Will Merritt, senior middie Collin Pierce and senior attackman Deron Turner all scored once.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Bass Barfield saved 12 shots for Austin, which overcame a four-goal, first-half deficit.

“I’m pleased with the fight and resilience, to go down 4-0 and come back and play the way we did,” Austin head coach Andy Garrigan said. “We still have a long way to go, but it was nice to beat a great team like this.”

In defeat, senior middie Pierce Ingram scored five goals, and junior attackman Nick Ierullo added four points on three goals and assist for Westwood (3-1), which had its season-opening, three-game winning streak snapped.

After scoring the game’s first four goals, Westwood led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter. Austin answered with a six-goal second quarter to take a 7-5 halftime lead, and the game was tied, 9-9, at the end of the third.

Austin led 11-10 late in regulation, but Ingram scored the equalizer with just 20 seconds remaining to force overtime.

The teams then played more than four minutes of scoreless lacrosse before Bedillion fed Roach from X, and Roach put the game on ice.

“Phenomenal game is a good description,” said first-year Westwood head coach Kenny Pailes, who suffered his first defeat. “It was an honor to coach a game like that. Our kids were absolutely amazing, and so were Austin High’s.”
