COL GIRLS: No. 1 Cherry Creek Edges No. 2 Kent Denver
March 11th, 2010
Stanford-bound senior middie Annie Anton registered a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists to lead No. 1 Cherry Creek to a 14-12 victory over No. 2 Kent Denver in a Colorado High School Activities Association game Wednesday afternoon.
Boston University-bound senior attack Kameryn Downing scored six goals, and California-bound senior middie Shelby Barrett added four points on two goals and two assists to help the Bruins (1-0) win their season opener.
Junior middie Kiki Boone finished with four points on a goal and three assists, and junior attack Bailey Zerr and sophomore middie Anya Gersoff both had a goal and an assist to round out the offense for Cherry Creek.
In defeat, sophomore middie Lucy Dikeou scored a team-high three goals for Kent Denver (0-1), which dropped its season opener.
The game featured an unusually high nine yellow cards, but Cherry Creek head coach Cayel Dwyer said that was more a result of sloppy play than any animosity between the two rivals.
“A lot of kids were out of position and doing things with their sticks that they should not have been doing,” he said.
Cherry Creek led 8-6 at halftime, but Kent Denver came back to tie it at 10-10 when sophomore middie Molly Coates scored with 12:43 remaining. Sophomore middie Lucy Mower gave the Sun Devils an 11-10 advantage soon after, but the Bruins responded with a four-goal run to wrest control of the game back.
Zerr scored the equalizer with 7:59 to play, Anton had the go-ahead goal to put Cherry Creek up 12-11 with 7:36 remaining, Downing made it a two-goal game with 4:53 left and Anton scored again to make it 14-11 with 3:09 remaining.
“It’s always nice to beat Kent,” Dwyer added. “The scheduling gods have enabled us to play them twice this season, so we’ll get a chance to gauge how far we’ve progressed when it comes close to playoff time.”
