March 16th, 2010
Senior middie Gavin Arblaster registered a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to lead Newport Harbor to an 8-4 victory over Capistrano Valley in a CIF-Southern Section game Monday night.
Sophomore attackman Jake Turner added four points on two goals and two assists to help the Sailors (4-1) win their second straight.
Sophomore attackman Riley Robinson, senior middie Tony Nasca and senior middie Daniel Apple all had a goal to round out the offense for Newport Harbor.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Zach Vayda saved 16 shots.
Capistrano Valley (0-2) lost its second straight to start the season.
Newport Harbor led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 6-2 at halftime and 8-3 at the end of the third quarter before cruising to the finish over the final 12 minutes.
“I’m really excited,” Newport Harbor first-year head coach Andreas Gaynor said when asked about his team’s 4-1 start.
“The kids are picking up on the techniques that we’re coaching. We’re senior-laden on defense, and that’s where we’re using our strength. And the offense keeps picking it up every game.”
