MO GIRLS: Nerinx Hall Advances to 4th Straight Title Game

May 21st, 2010

Nerinx Hall’s seniors will be getting a fourth and final attempt to bring home a state championship.

Senior middie Lauren Boland and junior middie Emily Behr each registered a co-game-high seven points to lead the top-seeded Markers to a 12-6 victory over fifth-seeded MICDS in a Missouri State High School Activities Association semifinal Thursday afternoon.

Boland scored five goals and added two assists, and Behr had three goals and four assists, as Nerinx Hall (15-2) advanced to the state championship game for the fourth straight season. The Markers have never won a state title.

Nerinx Hall will next face third-seeded Ursuline Academy on Saturday afternoon, May 22, at 3:30 p.m., CDT, at Lindenwood University. In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, the Markers beat the Bears, 9-8, on May 6.

“The girls are fired up,” Nerinx Hall head coach Jody Patterson said. “Ursuline is our big rival. They’re playing well right now, and so are we, so it’s going to be a battle. It’s going to be a fun game to be a part of.”

On Thursday, senior attack Dory Finney added three points on two goals and an assist, and senior attack Molly Karl scored twice to round out the Nerinx Hall offense.

Defensively, junior goalie Lizzie Puzniak saved 13 shots.

MICDS, which fell to 13-3, will next face John Burroughs in the third-place game Saturday at 2 p.m., CDT, at Lindenwood.

Nerinx Hall led 7-3 at halftime and put the game away with a three-goal run to start the second half. The Markers went ahead, 10-3, after Behr scored with 13:05 remaining in regulation.

“We finally came together,” Patterson said. “Our communication was awesome. We passed extremely well, and we worked off-ball better than we ever have.”
