MEN: Nebraska-Omaha Sidelined By School Administration

The University of Nebraska-Omaha men’s lacrosse program has forfeited its last three games, and it is unclear whether team will take the field again this season.
The Mavericks, who play in MCLA Division II, lost their first two games to Rockhurst (16-5) and to Missouri S&T (11-2) on Feb. 27 before the season was put to a halt by the school’s administration. Scheduled games on March 6 against Iowa and Augustana were both forfeited, as was today’s game against Cornell College.
Cornell College team president Brad Shrago told WSL that officials with the University of Nebraska-Omaha called Cornell College to inform the school that its team would not be competing this weekend.
Reached by phone Saturday afternoon, Nebraska-Omaha team president Cameron Patrick refused to say why his team has been sidelined.
“It’s a matter between the team and the administration,” he said.
Despite all the evidence, Patrick claimed his team was not suspended. He added that there is a possibility the Mavericks will return to the field this season. Other than that, however, he refused to comment.
“I’ve said all I can say,” he said.
A source inside the team who asked not be named because of the sensitivity of the situation said the suspension came as a result of a fight involving a member of the team during a road trip to Illinois. That was the weekend in which Nebraska-Omaha was supposed to play Iowa and Augustana.
“We drove seven hours there and seven hours back for nothing,” the source said.
The source said the coaching staff is trying to get the team reinstated, but it’s not looking promising at this point.
“The head coach is fighting for our season right now, but I’m not too hopeful,” he said. “It’s not looking too good in my eyes.”
