Senior attackman Nick de la Espriella scored a game-high five goals to lead Mira Costa to a 12-4 victory over Peninsula in a CIF-Southern Section game Monday night.

Junior middie Tom Farrell added five points on two goals and three assists, and senior middie Conor Murphy scored twice to help the Mustangs (1-1) bounce back from their season-opening loss to Foothill-Orange County on Saturday.

Freshman attackman Clay Russert, sophomore middie Austin Halfdell and junior middie Ryan Kole all had a goal to round out the offense for Mira Costa.

In defeat, senior attackman Scott Spielman scored twice for Peninsula (0-2), which dropped its second straight to start the season.

Mira Costa led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and 5-2 at halftime before pulling away in the second, in stark contrast to what happened against Foothill-OC. This time, Mira Costa went up 10-3 at the end of the third, and then easily held on in the fourth.

On Saturday night, the Mustangs conceded 13 goals in the final 17 minutes, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

“It was a nice bounce back from our game against Foothill,” Mira Costa head coach Dave Vinci said. “The guys really came out hard in the third quarter and took them out of the game.”
