NEB BOYS: NHSLA Semifinals: Millard West Tops Westside, 7-3

May 15th, 2009

Senior attackman Alex Myhre scored a game-high four goals to lead top-seeded Millard West to a 7-3 victory over fourth-seeded Westside in a Nebraska High School Lacrosse Association semifinal Friday at Tranquility Park in Omaha.

Junior attackman Connor Swanson, senior middie Zach Simpson and senior middie Will Mohon all added single goals to help the Wildcats (15-1) win their 14th straight and advance to the state championship game.

Millard West will next face the winner of Thursday night’s Creighton Prep-Papillion LaVista game. The Nebraska state championship game will be played Friday night, May 15, at 8 p.m., CDT, at Tranquility Park.

“Either team is going to be a tough game,” Millard West head coach Kurt Carlson said. “I think if we come out and play our game, we’ll be fine.”

On Thursday, the Millard West defense held Westside to 12 shots on goal, and senior goalie Ryan Grewcock saved nine of them.

In a losing effort, senior attackman Ben Lienemann scored all three goals for Westside (10-9).

In the first game of a semifinal doubleheader, Millard West led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, 6-3 at halftime and 7-3 at the end of the third quarter.

“I think we played great,” Carlson said. “The midfield really drove the offense today. We played the exact game we’ve been practicing for the last two months.”
