NEB BOYS: NHSLA Semifinals: Millard West Edges Lincoln, 7-6
May 22nd, 2010
Senior middie Will Mohan registered a co-team-high three points on two goals and one assist to lead defending state champion Millard West to a 7-6 victory over Lincoln in a Nebraska High School Lacrosse Association semifinal Friday at Tranquility Park in Omaha.
Mohan scored the goal that proved to be the game-winner with 7:55 remaining in regulation to give the Wildcats a two-goal lead, and Millard West held on from there to reach the state championship game for the fifth time in six years.
Millard West (13-2) will be going for its third state championship Saturday night against the winner of the Creighton Prep-West Des Moines Valley semifinal. The state championship game will be played at 8:30 p.m., CDT, at Tranquility Park.
“We’re pumped,” Millard West head coach Doug Stewart said. “I told my guys tonight’s not the time to celebrate. Tomorrow’s the game we’ve been looking forward to all year long. We’re ready to go.”
Senior attackman Connor Swanson added three points on a goal and two assists, senior middie Drew Erickson scored twice and senior middie Billy Garry and senior attackman Carl Vennerstrom each had a goal to round out the offense for Millard West.
Defensively, senior goalie Tyler Meuret saved seven shots.
Lincoln, which went 0-17 in its first year as a varsity program in 2009, fell to 13-3. Lincoln will play the Creighton Prep-West Des Moines Valley loser in the third-place game Saturday at 6 p.m., CDT.
The Rampage led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and 4-3 at halftime before Millard West came back to take a 5-4 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Wildcats went ahead 7-5 on Mohan’s aforementioned goal before Lincoln closed within one with 1:30 remaining. Lincoln had one final chance to send the game into overtime, but Meuret made the last of his seven saves in the final minute to preserve the lead.
“We played very well,” Stewart said. “We played very patient.”
