ID BOYS: TVLL Playoffs: Meridian Gets Best of Eagle, 6-4
May 19th, 2010
Senior attackman Matt Whinery scored two fourth-quarter goals to lead fifth-seeded Meridian to a 5-4 victory over fourth-seeded Eagle in a Treasure Valley Lacrosse League quarterfinal Tuesday.
Whinery's goals broke a 4-4 tie and sent the Warriors (10-4) into the TVLL semifinals. Meridian will next face top-seeded Boise on Thursday.
In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Boise beat Meridian, 12-5, on May 8.
On Tuesday, junior attackman Tre Jarboe and senior middie Brendan West each added a pair of goals. Senior attackman Erik Boschulte dished two assists to round out the offense for Meridian, which lost 10-5 to Eagle in both teams’ regular-season finale just three days earlier.
In the cage, senior goalie Michael Baker saved 12 shots.
In defeat, Dillon Fix scored twice for Eagle, which finished the season 9-8.
The game was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter, Meridian led 2-1 at halftime and it was tied again, 4-4, at the end of the third quarter.
Whinery then scored back-to-back goals in the fourth, with 9:37 and 8:05 remaining in regulation, to give Meridian a lead it would not relinquish.
“We showed up with a lot of heart, and we played real smart defense,” Meridian head coach Billy Baker said. “We caught them on transition and in unsettled plays and just executed when we needed it in the fourth quarter.”
