MEN: Matt Dini Leads St. Mary's Past UC Irvine, 15-4

Senior attackman Matt Dini registered a game-high six points on five goals and an assist to lead St. Mary’s to a 15-4 victory over UC Irvine in an MCLA Division II game Thursday night in Southern California.

Junior middie Jim Castilone added five points on four goals and an assist, senior attackman Clayton Sheridan had five points on two goals and three assists and sophomore middie Gavin Cooke scored twice to help the Gaels (1-1) bounce back from Wednesday’s season-opening overtime loss to Biola.

Freshman middie Matt Jaber scored a goal and won 8-of-10 face-offs for St. Mary’s.

UC Irvine (0-1) lost its season opener.

St. Mary’s took control early and never let up. The Gaels led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, 8-2 at halftime and 11-3 at the end of the third quarter.

“I think we played really well,” Dini said. “We moved the ball around on offense consistently, and we cleared really efficiently. I just think it was an all-around team effort. Coming off that Biola loss yesterday, we were all really fired up and came out firing on all cylinders.”
