MLL: Official Announcement on Contraction Imminent

Major League Lacrosse Commissioner David Gross told PhillyLacrosse.com Tuesday afternoon that the league will probably wait until Friday to announce the fate of the San Francisco Dragons, Los Angeles Riptide and two other teams that are expected to be contracted due to financial woes.

Meanwhile, Inside Lacrosse reported today that, according to unnamed league sources, the MLL is holding a meeting in Boston on Wednesday to determine the re-allocation of players from the teams expected to be dropped.

Inside Lacrosse reported last week that the Philadelphia Barrage, as well as the Dragons, Riptide and New Jersey Pride franchises will be eliminated, and that Rochester is moving to Toronto. IL also reported today that representatives from the remaining six MLL franchises will be involved in determining rosters for 2009.

Although the league continues to deny comment on any of the reports, Barrage coach Tony Resch confirmed the report that his team will be dropped. Sources also have confirmed that San Francisco – which is coached by Tom Slate and loaded with Philly players – also will be contracted.

The reasons for the contractions appear to be solely due to finances and the spiraling economy. The Barrage was taken over by the league last year and no new buyer was found, and sources indicate San Francisco was hit hard by rising transportation costs to bring in players every weekend from the East Coast.

Rumors have circulated that geography will be the biggest factor in deciding where players end up, with those living on the West Coast likely winding up with Chicago and Denver, and those on the East Coast being split between Boston, Washington, Long Island and Toronto.
