SEATTLE –
Junior attackman Cameron Girgus registered a game-high eight points on one goal and seven assists to lead Lynnwood to a 16-7 victory over San Juan in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association Division II state championship game Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers (16-3) captured their first state title in program history four years after losing in the Division II championship game to Eastlake.

“Overall, it was just a great team effort,” senior middie Alex Tindall said. “We’ve been working hard all season. This is what it was all for, and we came out and proved it today.”

The Dragons, who were making their first title-game appearance, had their eight-game winning streak snapped and finished the season 14-3.

Tindall posted six points on five goals and one assist, and senior middie Trey Knowles added five points on four goals and one assist. Freshman middie Nick Peters scored four times and junior attackman Sam Girgus added two goals. Junior attackman Devan Hardwick and senior defenseman Jon Williams each added an assist to round out the Tigers’ offense.

“We came out hard,” Tindall said. “We just kept pouring it on.”

Defensively, junior goalie David DeKoekkoek saved seven shots, and the Tigers’ defense held the league’s third-leading goal scorer, senior attackman Ryan Guard, to just one goal and two assists.

Lynnwood got on the board first before San Juan used a three-goal run to take a 3-1 lead with 7:03 left in the first. But Lynnwood scored four of the next five goals to take a 5-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Tindall scored his second goal of the night with 9:50 left in the second, and Peters added two more to give the Tigers an 8-4 halftime lead.

After the teams traded goals to start the second half, Lynnwood used a six-goal run late in the third to put it away. Knowles got it going with 5:06 remaining to put the Tigers ahead, 9-5, and Sam Girgus ended the run with 19 seconds remaining to give Lynnwood an insurmountable 10-goal lead.

San Juan senior middie Michael Ausilo scored three goals, senior attackman Kyle Skoog scored twice and senior middie Alex Michael scored once. Senior middie Forest Dayton added one assist to round out the Dragons’ offense.

San Juan senior goalie Calen Mahrer saved 15 shots.

“We just ran into a buzz saw,” San Juan head coach Rob Cuomo said. “We tried to contain their big three. They moved the ball really well, and we stuck with them early, but we could not find our groove.”
