SoCAL BOYS: Loyola-LA Edges Harvard-Westlake in OT, 6-5
March 11th, 2010
Senior middie Kenny Patricia scored the game-winning goal with 46 seconds remaining in overtime to give Loyola-Los Angeles a come-from-behind, 6-5 victory over Harvard-Westlake in a CIF-Southern Section game Wednesday night.
Patricia scored from just off the crease after he took a pass from senior attackman Max Lightbourne to lift the Cubs (3-0) to their third straight win to start the season. Patricia and Lightbourne each registered a co-team-high three points on two goals and one assist for Loyola, which rallied from a four-goal deficit.
Sophomore attackman Hunter McCormick also scored twice for the Cubs, who are undefeated under new head coach Scott Abraham.
Defensively, junior goalie Jack Woodruff saved 15 shots.
Harvard-Westlake (0-2) lost its second straight to start the season.
Harvard-Westlake got off to a dream start, rolling to a 4-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Loyola closed to within 4-1 at halftime, and then was a different team in the second half.
“We came out and played flat-footed, especially on defense,” Abraham said. “Harvard-Westlake came out and played an amazing first half. At the half I told our boys, ‘This is our half now. We have to do it the Loyola way: Play with pride, play with heart and leave everything on the field.’”
The pep talk worked. Loyola scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter to close within 4-3, and after Harvard-Westlake restored its two-goal edge early in the fourth, the Cubs fought back to tie it. McCormick scored the equalizer with 7:22 remaining to force overtime, as Loyola held Harvard-Westlake to just one goal over the final three quarters and overtime.
“My defense stepped it up,” Abraham added. “Our goalie made some amazing saves right in front of the crease. He won the game for us.”
