LOUISIANA HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE LEAGUE
The Team to Beat: Loyola-Shreveport
The defending state champion Flyers return almost everyone from their 2009 title-winning team and are the early favorite to follow up the first-ever LHSLL crown with a second. Loyola-Shreveport graduated just two seniors off its 25-man roster, although one of those was a critical All-State player. Nevertheless, the Flyers bring back plenty of firepower, with 23 returning varsity players.
Leading the way will be senior attackman J.T. Terzia, WSL’s 2009 Louisiana Player of the Year, who scored five goals in last year’s state championship game. He’ll be joined by senior goalie Chris Melson, Loyola’s lone returning first-team All-State selection, and All-District honorees in senior middie Chris Volentine, junior defenseman Dalton Mitchell and senior face-off middie Thompson Barro.
Loyola, which enters the season on a 10-game winning streak and hasn’t lost since last year’s season opener, will also get a boost from the return of senior defenseman John Parker, who missed the entire 2009 season with a knee injury, and freshman attackman Austin Melson, who is going to make a major impact.
Contenders: New Orleans Jesuit, Caddo Magnet, C.E. Byrd
New Orleans Jesuit made a surprise run to the state championship game last season, but with nine returning starters they won’t sneak up on anyone in 2010. Jesuit only graduated its starting goalie, so it brings back its entire attack, midfield and defense. Senior attackman Louis LaCour, a returning first-team All-State selection, should be the most feared offensive threat in the state this season.
Caddo Magnet will look to take a big leap forward in its first full season under head coach Michael Brand, who is also the head coach at Centenary College. Brand took over in the middle of the 2009 season and promptly led Caddo Magnet to the state semifinals. Magnet will have six returning starters, including senior middie Andrew Delo, a returning All-District selection who leads a first-line midfield that returns in its entirety.
On the face of it, this looks like a rebuilding year for C.E. Byrd. The Yellow Jackets graduated 15 seniors, including four first-team All-State players. Senior attackman Ben Eldredge and senior defenseman Carson Harper must step up in the absence of last year’s upperclassmen.
Sleeper: St. Thomas More
Last season was a down year for a St. Thomas More club that owned the old Deep South Lacrosse League two years ago. But this year’s group should be much stronger now that last season’s sophomore-heavy roster is battle tested. St. Thomas More graduated just three seniors and will be led by junior attackman Saban Sellers, middie Ashton Langlanais and defenseman Brady Lerille.

LaCour took the LHSLL by storm last season, racking up one huge game after another. But he was shut down and held without a point by Loyola in the state championship game, a fact that should provide one of the state’s best players with a little extra motivation throughout his senior year.

However, of the four seniors in 2009, three were first-team, All-State selections, so they may be difficult to replace.
