Here's my pre season ranking.
1. Loyola

3.Magnet
4.Catholic
5.Byrd
6.Shreve
7. Brother Martin
8. Archbishop Rummel
9.St Thomas Moore
10.Mandeville
Magnet over Loyola for the state title.
woah now
You don't even think jesuit is going to make it to the championship? I mean come on let's try to be realistic here, they came second in state last year and the only player they lost for this season was their goalie. Jesuit versus Loyola for a rematch in the championship.
Magnet truly gave Loyola a
Magnet truly gave Loyola a run for their money in the semi finals last season and they are very improved this year. Loyola easily handled Jesuit in the finals. The new format has the first seed in the north vs the second seed in the south and vice versa in the final four...hence my predictions.
Regional Rankings
Here's something to focus on. While negative in a sense, I am putting it out there for motivation: Our state champion is ranked 1152 in the nation in Laxpower:
http://www.laxpower.com/update09/binboy/natlccr.php
and not rated here at all here:
http://blogs.insidelacrosse.com/2009/05/07/inside-lacrosse-high-school-regional-rankings-may-7/
I do not mean this as a slam against Loyola, but post it as a reality check for all Louisiana teams. We all need to bring the level of our game up. Let's work together, not tear each other down. Let's play teams out of state and whip them and then, let's all cheer the other team when they do. There's lots of positive work to do. Roy (and any other player), get your team mates to put on a lacrosse clinic for younger kids. Talk up the sport among your peers. Let's hear from the players thechanges they would like to see in the league for next season and ideas that can make the league better.
Honor the Game
Guys, lets focus on the positives. This was a GREAT weekend for Louisiana Lacrosse. There were four very good teams that played this weekend. Any of those teams could have won the championship. All three games were very fun to watch and in my opinion were played fairly well (sometimes sloppy, but overall not a bad showcase for a first year championship). The Shreveport teams and booster clubs, along with the city put on a great championship weekend. Friday nights banquet was extremely nice and very informative. Having the use of Independence Stadium gave the games a little extra championship feel. Having use of the video on the scoreboard with instant replay was awesome. The announcements by the person in the press box about what was happening on the field kept all fans informed. There are tons of other things that went on this weekend that we could talk about other than, "Byrd is rude, Jesuit is rude, Loyola is rude, Magnet is rude." Instead, lets say, Congratulations to Loyola, Jesuit, Magnet, and Byrd for making it to the semifinals. Lets say, Congratulations to Loyola and Jesuit for making it to the finals. And most importantly, lets say, Congratulations to Loyola for winning the innaugaral State Championship. As someone else who posted on here said, lets move on to next season. Lets talk about what we can do to help grow this sport from 16 teams to 32 teams. Good luck to everyone in the offseason. Good luck to all the seniors that are graduating this year.
Amen brother...
...so what can we do to expand the league? Any suggestions? I'm in North La. We have 4 teams. South La. has a bunch more teams. We need to grow it up here. Bossier would be a logical area to expand, but I've heard the schools there are resistant. What about Minden, Ruston and/or Monroe? How do we encourage them to join us?
On a separate note, NCAA Lacrosse tournament is coming up this weekend. I believe ESPNU and ESPN2 will cover the games with the finals on Memorial Day (check here: http://www.ncaa.com/). Some great lacrosse is being played by the nation's top players. Lots of fun to watch.
Couple of things needed to
Couple of things needed to grow the sport in my opinion.
We need to get some of these schools in the North to start accepting lacrosse. The South seems to be growing at a steady rate; however, the north has been stagnant for years. Targeting the middle schools should be priority. If we can draw interest in middle schools then that will flow into the high schools. Some of the target schools here in Shreveport would be: Youree Drive MS, Caddo Middle Magnet, St. Josephs, St. Johns, Southfield. There may be others but I can't think of all of their names. Some of these schools may be too small to field a full team, but they could combine.
Secondly, we need coaches and referees. Without either of these lacrosse will not be able to grow. Some of the former parents need to start refereeing and not calling it quits after their kids graduate. Also I know that the coaches in the high schools are more than willing to train parents that are wanting to coach. Then we can pool these parents into the middle schools.
Thirdly, we need to get the high schools interested. Some of the high schools in which kids could initially afford lacrosse would be: Parkway, Airline, Benton, Calvary, Evangel and Southwood. Most of these schools are resistent to lacrosse because they see it as a burden, but we need to get them to buy into the fact that it would only help them.
Lastly, we need this league to work. The LHSLL, this season, had some pretty weak leadership. A fledgling league like the LHSLL needs a solid and strong leader that understands the game of lacrosse. Not that the LHSLL leadership was bad this season, they just seemed a bit nonchalant.
These are some major factors to helping lacrosse grow. These of course wouldn't be all the factors, but they are some of the most important in my opinion.

Reply
I feel that I am qualified and would like to reply. If you want to try and claim that this is whining then go ahead. I will first say that I am a Byrd players parent. That is my real name not some fake screen name and so that players, parents and coaches know who I am, I ran the clock for all of the Byrd home games. Now to address your items. First you address the parents and fans. It is obvious that since you shook hands you are a player or coach. Unless a parent specifically came up to you, then I don't think you should be bringing them into this discussion. After the playoff game, every parent that I saw either said nothing or said congratulations and good luck or something like that. If there was some issue, here is my real email kenandbrenmc@bellsouth.net and we can discuss this in private. Not saying I can do anything, but I would like to know about it. Secondly you talk about the players and how all they do is cheapshot, are cocky, and rude. I really don't know why Byrd is the only team that seems to be called that on this website. Let me elaborate. As the clock operator I am between the teams so I have a pretty good look and can hear what goes on both ways. Trust me players on every team in the league drop the f-bomb and every other obscenity on a regular basis. (Parents don't think yours isn't one of them). Loyola had comments that were removed from this website saying the "Byrd would suck" a certain part of Snoopys anatomy and that they would "rape Byrd in the a*@." I am assuming that you are a Jesuit player. Lets discuss the last time you played in Shreveport and every time a Jesuit player came off the field after a penalty or a goal they threw their stick and said "this is f@#$ing b****t". Don't even try to deny it. I have seen players and coaches after an emotional game refuse to go through the line and shake hands (that show good sportsmanship and rudeness). Let's take Byrd out of the equation. At least one player from Magnet and Loyola got suspended for rough play during a game between them this year. We had at least three concussions at the hands of south LA teams. What I am trying to say is every team plays physical. In case you are interested look at the Shreveport Times website. Their impartial photographers took some pictures some of which you might want to have. But if you look at them you will see crosschecks, holds, and illegal checks by Jesuit, Byrd, Magnet, and Loyola players also. The point I am trying to make is that everybody on this website tries to make Byrd out to be so dirty, but all of the teams play like that, they just won't admit it.
Next. You talk about them crying and being weak. How many professional athletes have you seen lose a championship and cry on national t.v. These are guys that will have another chance. For the seniors, there is no other chance. They played their last lacrosse game. Not only that, but this was also a closing of a very important chapter of a huge portion of their lives. If you can fault someone for shedding a tear over that then you are a pretty insensitive person. You also have to understand. Many of them don't feel that "you" took their dream away. During the last game against Byrd when your player got the 3 minute penalty and Byrd scored he cried, I saw it and saw the coaches having to console him.
I know this is long, but in conclusion players, parents, and coaches before you get on here spewing crap about other teams, parents, coaches, players etc. take a good look at your own house.
yes byrd dad read this!
Your comment is obviously worthless because you have no idea what you are talkning about. You say in your comment that our parents dont know how much we curse and swear, well it is really you who is the ignorant parent. You dont play the game so you wouldnt know how much your great son and his team of mohawks cheat and completely play with their bodies and emotions more than with their skill and mind. The byrd team gets mad and acts like a bunch of little girls and starts racking up the penalties. If you watched the game Jesuit started scoring and then byrd got mad so they started cheating to try and get back into the game. Thats when they recieved all of their 3rd quarter penalties.
well i think most people now
well i think most people now understand where the byrd players get their attitudes from, their parents. The fact the you parents are first of all on this site complaining and second of all calling other players "snot nosed punks" is an evident sign that you parents can hold your tempers just as well as your kids, which is not at all. Yall need to quit complaining; Jesuit won and thats all there is to it. I understand if the parents are upset that their sons got their a**** handed to him but they're going to have to suck it up, and hopefully come back next season with a more skilled team. Move on and good luck trying to beat Jesuit next season; maybe this time Byrd won't come in thinking theyre gonna walk all over a team. By the way, the mowhawks were completley unecessary.
Where does it say I'm a Byrd parent
My son, who did play for a Shreveport team, no longer plays for any team. I am just someone who was excited that LA was finally getting its own league and who is also tired of all the crap. You sound like a bunch of whining first graders. All ya'll do is consistantly post (whine) about one team being poor sports. If anybody bothers to reply then you attack them and say they are whiners. Let it go. Loyola won you. Jesuit is the first loser which is what second place is. I will also be joining the person above and boycotting this forum from now on because it is only tearing the league apart and I don't want to be part of that.
One last thing. I complement your coach on doing half of his job. You do have a very good team for that I give him credit, but he is failing at the first part of your own websites wording of "We're more about forging character than winning..." I also think that it is ironic that the players from a "christian" school seem to be exactly of what they are on here accusing another school of being. Rude, foul-mouthed, obnoxious, etc. etc. etc. Get the point. I'm sure the priest, monsignor, or whatever heads your school would be proud of the reputation you are bringing your school.
parents*
You're Pathetic
Shouldn't have stooped to your level but it is players like you that will make this league a joke. Your reply shows that you are so ignorant or that you are from some other team just trying to start something. It sounds to me like he knows exactly what he is talking about. He says that all teams are like that not just Jesuit. You also say he doesn't play, how do you know that he is not a former player and even so what does that matter. I thought his post was well worded and defensable. Yours is just dribble. If I would have written I would have added that if it didn't bother your players very much that they lost if I was the coach I would question how bad they actually wanted it. Maybe ya'll didn't want it as bad as Loyola and that's why you got your a@#$ handed to you. You know there are close to 400 posts on this website. Probably well over 50% are either attacking Byrd's team or defending it. Sounds like jealousy to me.
Seeing Red
Hey Roy. I wonder if you and "this guy" are typical of the whole Jesuit team. Do you even care if you respresent the Jesuit team so negatively? Probably not.
Man, you defeat Byrd, yet you are not satisfied with that. You two come on a forum and continue to criticize Byrd after your win. You just can't let it go. It's almost as if you are obsessed with Byrd. I only wonder what venom you two (and possibly others) would be spewing had you lost to Byrd.
Maybe another idea for "growing this league" would be to do away with this forum. It sure has reflected poorly on some of the lax players, parents and fans in Louisiana.
Now, this is only an assumption on my part.....but I can't imagine that a person such as you, who comes on this board and lashes out like you do (you hold the record for most number of posts deleted).............well, I can only imagine how you act on the playing field in the heat of competion. Maybe you were manhandled by Byrd and are ticked off by that, but I imagine you have had anger management problems in all aspects of your life. Ever noticed how quit to anger you are?
(Note to self: you do realize that by writing this you are going to incite Roy).
ha
Time to grow the sport
Your best post to date. I will admit that I am surprised at your response.......didn't expect this, but to be consistent I compliment you for your positive post.
I have thought all along that if people would only post positive information about their own team, positive comments about another team, constructive comments about Louisiana lax or comments about lax in general this site would have value. As it was this site showed the dark side of many people.
I know this forum is not "Louisiana Lax" per se, but it does reflect poorly on the league and has reflected poorly on some of the people associated with Louisiana lax. Likewise, it has shown the positive side of other people. Let me quickly say that all sports have at least a few people who give the sport a black eye, so lax is no different there. I do believe that most players on Louisiana league teams are good, decent kids who are competitive, want to win and play with high character. However, I will admit that I have wondered, "Would it be a bad thing if lacrosse didn't even make it in Louisiana." In the end, if a person is not "better off" for having played that sport then maybe that person missed out or the program failed him/her. I know examples of both.
Respectfully disagree
I have been around louisiana lacrosse for some time here in the Shreveport region. Just because the players post some negative things on here does not mean that they are bad kids. They are just kids being kids. The competitive nature of the players sometimes drags on after the game, but under normal circumstances these kids are friends on and off the field. I have watched long time friends go head to head at each other on the field, but after the game you see them talking and carrying on as if the game never happened. Lacrosse builds a lot of character in some of these players and to even make a comment that "it wouldn't be a bad thing if lacrosse didn't make it," is silly (no disrespect intended). I think that we, as parents, former players, coaches, and fans, need to set examples for the players. We need to not yell negative things at players, officials, and coaches during games. We need to applaud the players and coaches for their efforts on and off the field, even if its not a player or coach from your respective team. We need to stay positive. I know that this is way easier said than done, but if we display this attitude, it will reflect on the attitudes of the players.
Let me clear a few things up.
You are disagreeing with two points I did not make. Nowhere did I say anything about "bad kids". The only place I think you might have read that into what I wrote was when I said that this forum has reflected the dark side of some people. I do believe that "good kids" can do bad things and getting on a forum and writing some of the stuff that has been written has been one of those "bad things" and, in my opinion, "not good" for Louisiana Lacrosse. I agree that the league is filled with outstanding students and outstanding young men.
I also did not say that "it would be a good thing if Lax" went away. What I said was that I posed the question - "Would it be a good thing if lax died in Louisiana? - we all have to ask that question. What are the pros and cons. I think that sports (all sports) both build character and reveal character. Therefore, lax can be a very positive factor in a young man's life. On the other hand, if lax went away, or football or baseball, there would be other avenues to build character. Everything is, afterall, optional. So, I see lax as a gift, an opportunity, something that should be developed. But, if a particular lax team or even a league is not well managed, not appreciated, not supported, not "honored" as some say, then it can become a negative thing. Overall my experience with lax has been very positive.
clarification appreciated
Thanks for clearing that up. I think I was looking at your post and several others and got them mixed up. I am not sure if you are a former players parent or a present player's parent, or coach, or whatever it may be, but what I do know is that it seems as though you care for the sport. We need you and parents like you to help us grow the sport. I hope that in the future we can all get together and come up with some ideas for the future of Louisiana Lacrosse.
Reply
The "Loyola" comments (Snoopy, etc.), were actually made by a former BYRD student.
hmm..
well i dont think the refs were playing so if i had to guess id say Jesuit...
Semi-final
The league got what it wanted a East1 vs. West1 and a north and south game. Byrd had 19 penalties in the game 10 of those were in the 3rd quarter. You tell me who really won the game Jesuit or the refs.
Jesuit/Byrd
If you are suggesting that the refs called the game so that the league would get "what it wanted," I have to disagree. As a uninterested observer to that game, Byrd got beat. Plain and simple. The refs didn't score a single goal for Byrd. Jesuit has good players and so does Byrd. From what I saw, the difference in the game for Jesuit was better discipline and focus; two factors that play into penalties. Also, on Saturday afternoon, Byrd had no answer for Louis Lacour or frankly, anyone who sneezed on the ball toward the goal. It was 7-5 Byrd at the end of the first half and the second half was 9-3 Jesuit in the second half. Lacour was contained on Sunday and Loyola won.
But enough complaining. Loyola won this year. Good for them. That was last season, now. Can they repeat? Loyola only loses 2 seniors, albeit one All-State. Byrd loses a core group of seniors; Jesuit looks like it is returning many in the starting lineup. Magnet is losing a solid group of seniors, but has a lot of returning juniors and some very talented rising juniors and sophmores. St. Thomas More was rebuilding this year, are they rebuilt?; Catholic looks like it played Jesuit tight during the season.
Let's discuss the future of Louisiana lacrosse and let the past go. It's next season already!
