May 12th, 2010
Senior middie Shaina Denny registered a team-high five points on two goals and three assists to lead No. 5 Los Alamitos to a 12-8 victory over Foothill-Orange County in the CIF-Southern Section South Division championship game Tuesday afternoon at Laguna Hills High School.
Freshman attack Julie Crowell added four points on three goals and one assist, senior middie Ashley Actkinson scored three goals and junior middie Melissa Hastie scored twice to help the Griffins (20-0) win their 39th straight game and repeat as Orange County champions.
Senior attack Tracy Paulson finished with a goal and an assist, and junior middie Torrey Bailey scored once to round out the offense for top-seeded Los Alamitos.
In the cage, senior goalie Natalie Richards saved nine shots.
“I’m just really proud of them,” Los Alamitos head coach Meredith Meyran said. “We got better and better every, single day in practice, and that was our goal. We just knew if we could continue to improve during the season, we would be setting ourselves up to go far in the playoffs.”
Third-seeded Foothill-Orange County finished the season 12-3 and lost in the Orange County championship game to Los Alamitos for the second straight season. The Knights have been eliminated by the Griffins in the Orange County playoffs three consecutive years.
Los Alamitos led 8-3 at halftime before Foothill scored back-to-back goals to start the second half and close within 8-5. It was 9-6 after the teams traded goals, but Foothill never cut the deficit any closer.
With the victory, Los Alamitos advanced to the CIF-Southern Section championship game, where the Griffins will defend their title against unbeaten Los Angeles champion Redondo Union. Los Alamitos goes into the title game as the overwhelming favorite.
The Los Angeles area champion has never beaten the Orange County champion in the Southern Section championship game in either girls or boys lacrosse. The championship game will be played Friday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m., PDT, at Valencia High School in Placentia.
“We’re excited to play Redondo,” Meyran said. “We don’t know anything about them. We’re just going to go out and focus on our play like we have all season and just go out and execute.”
