Sophomore attackman Grant Clifford scored the game-winning goal with 2:27 remaining in double-overtime to give No. 21 Lincoln a dramatic, 10-9 victory over Sunset in the Oregon High School Lacrosse Association state championship game Saturday night at Tualatin High School.

Clifford scored on a high shot from the top of the crease off a feed from junior middie Tony Baum to set off a wild celebration and give the Cardinals (21-3) their second state championship in the last three seasons.

“I think people underestimated how many good sticks we could put on the field,” Lincoln head coach Will Harris said. “We really made it happen. We were an unheralded group. I’m really proud of the way this team came together and played together.”

Clifford scored a co-game-high four goals, senior middie Henry Schoonmaker added three points on two goals and one assist and senior attackman Matt Fettig scored twice for Lincoln, which finished the season on a 17-game winning streak and went unbeaten against Oregon competition.

Senior middie Zane Koeller and senior middie Aaron Barg each had a goal, and sophomore attackman Michael Marcott and Baum both finished with one assist to round out the offense.

Defensively, junior goalie Max Dickenson saved 17 shots for the Cardinals, who squandered a six-goal, second-half lead before recovering to win the title.

In defeat, senior middie K.J. Paik scored four goals, junior attackman Curtis Eschman finished with three goals, senior attackman Ben Dill had two goals and an assist and senior attackman Nate Berry dished a pair of assists for Sunset (21-3), which had its 19-game winning streak snapped.

In the cage, senior goalie Jack Regan saved 11 shots.

Lincoln led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 8-2 after Fettig scored with 10:47 remaining in the third quarter.

But Sunset, which was 19-0 against Oregon competition coming into the state-title game, stormed back in the second half. The Apollos went on a six-goal run to tie the game, 8-8, after Paik drew Sunset level with 4:08 remaining in regulation.

Clifford scored his third of the night to put Lincoln ahead, 9-8, with 1:31 to play, but Sunset answered again. The Apollos forced overtime when Eschman scored the equalizer with just eight seconds left.

The teams then played one scoreless four-minute overtime and went more than a minute into the second extra session before Clifford finished it.

“I’m very impressed with Sunset for coming back,” Harris said. “My kids drew on their own experience to do what had to be done to come through. My kids knuckled down to get the winning goal.”
