IA-NEB BOYS: Lincoln Edges West Des Moines Valley, 7-6

April 11th, 2010

Senior attackman Jameson Rupert scored his only goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Lincoln to a 7-6 victory over West Des Moines Valley in a Nebraska High School Lacrosse Association game Sunday morning.

Rupert scored with a low shot inside the far post from a couple yards off the crease to give the Rampage (5-1) its fourth straight win. Rupert finished with a co-team-high two points on a goal and an assist.

Junior middies Phil Ehrman and Mason Adams, and sophomore attackman Riley Giesler, all scored twice for Lincoln.

In the cage, freshman goalie Will Ehrman saved 12 shots.

In defeat, junior middie Dylan Griess scored a game-high five goals, and senior attackman Cam Bostwick had a goal for West Des Moines Valley (5-2), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Last year, a Lincoln-West Des Moines Valley match-up wouldn’t merit much attention. The Rampage went 0-17 in its first year as a varsity program and the Tigers played a JV schedule. But this year, the teams were a combined 9-2 going into the game and had earned two of the top four slots in the state rankings.

And the game lived up to expectations.

West Des Moines Valley led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, Lincoln led 4-3 at halftime and the Rampage led 6-5 at the end of the third quarter.

The Tigers drew level early in the fourth when Bostwick scored his only goal with 10:32 to play in regulation. The teams then played nearly 10 minutes of scoreless lacrosse before Rupert netted the game-winner.

On the winning play, Rupert picked up a ground ball and then dodged to shake his defender and get his hands from before firing it home.
