AZ BOYS: Late Run Lifts Salpointe Catholic Past Horizon, 7-5
March 6th, 2010
Junior middie Kyle Bakewell scored a team-high two goals to lead Tucson Salpointe Catholic to a 7-5 victory over Horizon in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I game Saturday afternoon.
Senior attackman Cameron Wilhite, senior attackman Ben Nielson and senior middie Paul Montano all added a goal and an assist to help the Lancers (2-0) win their second straight to start the season. Senior long-stick middie Ryan Baker and junior attackman Steve Montano also had goals for Salpointe Catholic.
In defeat, junior attackman Eric Laub scored a game-high three goals, and senior attackman Jack Fairfield had three points on two goals and an assist for Horizon (0-2), which lost its second straight.
In the cage, Horizon sophomore goalie Ian Darnell saved 14 shots.
In a game that was tight from start to finish, Salpointe Catholic held a decisive edge on ground balls that proved to be the difference. Salpointe Catholic picked up twice as many ground balls as Horizon.
“The real determining edge was the ground-ball battle,” Salpointe Catholic head coach Kevin Krieger said. “It was an incredibly sloppy game for both teams.”
The game was tied, 4-4, in the fourth quarter when Laub scored his third of the day to give Horizon the lead with 5:29 remaining. However, Salpointe Catholic finished the game with a three-goal run.
Baker scored the equalizer with 4:10 remaining, Bakewell fired in the go-ahead goal with 3:42 to play and Steve Montano added insurance with 2:02 remaining.
“It was a good game,” Horizon head coach Ben Jones said. “We certainly could have won, but we just couldn’t find the net on offense.”
