TEX BOYS: Memorial Nets 'Biggest Win' in Upset of St. John's
March 9th, 2010
Senior attackmen Robert Sauermann and Matt Steininger each registered a co-game-high five points to lead Memorial to a 10-8 upset victory over St. John’s in a Texas High School Lacrosse League South District Division I game Monday night.
Sauermann scored four goals and added an assist, and Steininger had three goals and two assists, as the Mustangs (4-3) won their third straight.
Senior middie Philip Johnson scored a pair of critical fourth-quarter goals, and senior attackman Harrison Walker finished with a goal and an assist to round out the offense for Memorial, which trailed going into the fourth quarter but finished the game on a three-goal run to take it.
“It’s the biggest win in our program,” Memorial head coach Mike Newton said. “This win really consummates the work some of these seniors have put in for four years. In my mind, it’s bigger than any DII championship that they played in.”
In defeat, senior attackman Zach Gaitz had a team-high four points on two goals and two assists, and senior middie Reed Daniel added three points on a goal and two assists for St. John’s, which fell to 3-3.
Memorial led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, St. John’s came back to take a 5-4 halftime lead, and the Mavericks led 8-7 at the end of the third quarter.
But Memorial drew level when Johnson scored his first of the night with seven minutes remaining, and Steininger fired home the go-ahead goal with 3:48 to play to make it 9-8. Johnson added insurance on a man-up situation 40 seconds later.
“Our guys are just trying too hard,” St. John’s head coach Sam Chambers said. “They’re trying to do too much by themselves.”
